SATYA RANJAN COLLEGE is located at Brahman Gram about one kilometer away from the Kalain Bazar area on the way to Agartala-Shillong NH-44 road, Dist- Cachar, Assam. (GPS Coordinates: 24° 58' 20.0928'' N, 92° 33' 50.7492'' E). The College was established in the year of 1992 to fulfill the hopes & aspirations of the people of Katigorah Legislative Assembly Constituency. Infect it was the 1st and oldest Higher Educational institution in Katigorah Constituency. The establishment of the College was for the fulfillment of long standing desire of the people of greater Katigorah and Kalain area to have an institution of Higher Education. The college was set up through the commendable efforts by its founding father, who were not only inspired pursuing higher education, but also visualized the necessity of establishing a college which would facilitate in providing education to the educationally backward people in the far-flung area. The pioneering work was initiated by the educationalists, leaders and local residents of Kalain area who left no stone unturned to concretize the noble vision of expanding opportunity for Higher Education and gave a sound footing for the establishment of the college.

Shri Shanto Mohan Das, a resident of village Jabda donated 4 Bighas of land to establish the college in the memory of his father “Shri Satya Ranjan Das” in appreciation of his genuine concern for the cause of higher education in the greater Katigorah and Kalain area. Local people of Kalain neighboring villagers also came forward and donated materials both in cash and kind to erect the college building. Some collections were also accumulated from passengers of Shillong and Guwahati by the members of the Governing Body of the college, teachers, staffs and well wishers to enhance the “college development fund”.

Shri Santosh Mohan Dev, Hon’ble Ex- Central minister of Heavy Industry and Enterprises also donated a sum of Rs. 3.5 Lakhs for the development of the college in the year 1995. Shri Kali Ranjan Deb, Ex-MLA of Katigorah Constituency and the former President of the governing body also gave 2.5 Lakhs for its development. Shri Azizur Rahman Khan, an hon’ble member, donated 7 Bighas and 2 Katas of land for the establishment of the college.

In the beginning the classes were started at Kalain Gaon Panchayet Office and in the Kalain H.S School and was shifted to its own college building in 1994. At present students on roll pursuing their graduation on Arts stream with subjects like English, Bengali, Political Science, Economics, History, Philosophy, Arabic, Manipuri, Elective Bengali, Alt. English and with Honors in Bengali, Political Science and Economics.

Shri Debojyoti Dasgupta was the In-Charge Principal of the college during its initial period. Later on Dr. Bhakti Madhab Chattapadya, (Rtd. Principal of Cachar College, Silchar) was nominated as the Principal of the college and continued to serve till 1998. He was superseded by Dr. S.N Singh (Rtd. HOD of Political Science of Cachar College, Silchar) and continued his service till 2003. Finally Dr. Bijit Goswami was appointed as Principal of the college in the year 2003 & continuing till date.

The college got its affiliation to Assam University, Silchar up to degree level in the year 1994. The government of Assam has accorded concurrence on affiliation to Assam University, Silchar in the year 2001. And finally after 21 years of its long journey, the Department of Higher Education, Assam (Govt. of Assam) listed and declared the college as a newly provincialised Higher Educational Institution under the Govt. of Assam in the year 2013.

The college could take its present shape due to the restless effort to execute the noble vision of many philanthropists, academic and generous persons. The college humbly recognizes their sincere effort and immense struggle for finding its footprint. Satya Ranjan College will always remember them and will always try to fulfill their dream by providing a healthy environment in which all round development of humanity may become possible and always strive to equip the students with essential skills, confidence and sense of responsibility so that they become successful in their life and better citizen of the country.

In the 24 years since the inception of the college, the college has served the society significantly and will continue to serve forever.
